Tired of that plain bookcase in your office? On today’s Room for Improvement, our Makeover Maestro has an easy project to spruce up that boring piece of furniture.
Martin Amado: “On today’s Room for Improvement, I’m going to show you how to give a plain piece of furniture like this one, a designer look on a budget. It’s an easy do-it-yourself project, I promise you, so let’s begin.”
Martin Amado: “So here we have a nice looking bookcase. The problem is that the inside is like looking at a black hole. So, my idea is to wallpaper the back, creating a beautiful focal point.”
Martin Amado: “There’s two ways to do this. If you’re assembling the bookcase, you can actually wallpaper the backing before attaching it.”
Martin Amado: “In our case, the backing is already stapled on and I don’t want to compromise the structure by removing it. Therefore, the solution is to create four individual panels, wallpaper that and then attach them directly on the inside. It’s going to look awesome.”
Martin Amado: “I’m using a piece of hard board that I bought for less than $6 and if you notice, it’s very thin as well, which helps us. And, this will be my new backing on the inside of the bookcase.”
Martin Amado: “Now, if you don’t have a circular saw at home, don’t worry, you’re local home improvement store can also cut these down for you. Now, comes the fun part, choosing the paper.”
Martin Amado: “You have a wide selection of colors and patterns from modern to traditional. And I think I’m going for this one.”
Martin Amado: “Because we’re working with a pattern, we want it to be continuous from one cubby hole to the next. In order to achieve that I’m attaching the wallpaper to two panels together, then cutting it and putting it in place. And then I’m repeating the same process on the other side.”
Martin Amado: “Tada! And, there you go. The pattern matches from top to bottom, from left to right. So now we attach it to the back of the bookcase using double stick tape.”
Martin Amado: “The best part is that this is always removable so if you ever get tired of the design, simply peel it off.”
Martin Amado: “So, we took something plain, gave it a facelift and now we have a one of a kind piece of furniture you can feel proud saying, hey I did this myself. Until next time, I’m Martin Amado for 7News.”
