Jo Mersa Marley

Posted: Updated:

When you think of getting into the family business, you think of lawyers, doctors or even Tony Soprano's family business. But there is one So-Flo family where the business is music to your ears.

For Jo Mersa, when it comes to music, it's all in the family.

Jo Mersa Marley: "My name is Jo Mersa Marley. I'm first born son of Stephen Marley. I'm one of the grandsons of Bob Marley. I'm the third generation of Marley."

Bob Marley's legacy lives on in his children, and now in their children.

Jo Mersa: "It's family. Music is the business they are in. They've inspired me in every way possible."

Jo just released his first EP, "Comfortable," and it's already climbing the Billboard reggae charts.

Jo Mersa: "It's an EP that consists of six tracks. One is a more rebellious track and the other ones are more for the women."

With Bob as his grandfather, Stephen as his dad and Ziggy as his uncle, music is in his genes, but Jo wants his sound to be his own.

Jo Mersa: "I don't stick to one genre. I pulled everything reggae, dance hall, hip hop, R&B, EDM, techno."

Turns out mixing up types of music is genetic.

Jo Mersa: "From what my father speaks of my grandfather, he wasn't just a man who appreciated one kind of music. He would go into different genres. For example, my father the other day let me hear the original demo for 'Could You Be Loved,' and it was actually disco."

We didn't see that one coming, either.

Jo Mersa: "Yeah, the original. He redubbed everything live."

Getting back to Jo, while most people study their craft in school, he studied his in the school of Marley.

Jo Mersa: "I've learned everything I know about music from them, if not from them, then watching them. I've listened to what they are listening to."

He knew from a young age that music was in his blood, and he set out to pursue it.

Jo Mersa: "When the group Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers toured back in the day, we were young children. They would call us up on stage at the song 'Look Who's Dancing.' We would come on and do our favorite part, whoever's favorite verse."

But, just because he had the lineage, his dad wasn't going to make it easy.

Jo Mersa: "He would tell me, 'Because you're my son, you would have to work twice as hard. Build character is what it did for me, and I'm very thankful for it."

Now Jo is hitting the road for a two-month summer tour.

Jo Mersa: "Wherever the music takes me, that's what makes me continue in that journey of where the music takes me."

Big, bouncing, beautiful butts: that's what pop culture is currently obsessed with. I can't blame people, though. I mean, I get it. I love JLo's luscious curves, Kim Kardashian's arguably more-than-ample derriere, Miley Cyrus' terrific, tail-twerking ways; I'm even warming up to Nicki Minaj's booty-popping song and video, "Anaconda."
