Crime Mapping will allow crime search in neighborhoods

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A new mapping app will give Broward County residents the ability to search for nearby crime from the palm of their hand.

Crime is a common occurrence, but now residents will be able to answer the question if crime occurs near their homes. "There has been some crime in my neighborhood," said Deerfield Beach resident Bett Willett. "There's been crime right next door to me, and I really want to know about that."

The Broward Sheriff's Office has released an interactive phone application that will allow the public to be informed on crime throughout Broward County. "The Sheriff's Office is launching a new crime data tracking site," said BSO spokesperson Gina Carter.

The app, called Crime Mapping, will allow users in Broward County to log on and search by crime, dates, address and police agencies. "They can see what's happening in their neighborhood, be aware of what's happening," said Carter. "They can use it as a preventative measure. If you go on there and you see that there's been a rash of burglaries, that's gonna trigger you to be a little more careful."

The project originally began in Deerfield Beach as a crime alert service, but with its growth in popularity, the app was expanded for all of Broward County.

"It shows all of the different areas and the different types of crime, and what's happening," said Willett.

Once an area of interest is highlighted, users will be able to click on icons to gain more information on crimes, including arsons, assaults and murder. "I appreciate the city for making this happen," Willett said. "It keeps me more comfortable. I feel better about that, knowing where it is, and what's going to happen."
