MIAMI (WSVN) -- The heartbroken members of a South Florida congregation are falling back on their faith, three days after one of their ministers was murdered outside a convenience store.

Parishioners at Power, Faith and Deliverance Ministries in Miami mourned the loss and celebrated the life of assistant pastor Ken Johnson during an afternoon service on Sunday.

Johnson was shot and killed Thursday during a struggle with thieves over his gold chain outside the City Market convenience store, located on 62nd Street and Northwest 13th Avenue in Liberty City. The 67-year-old managed to fight one of the two suspects off, but the second shot him three times.

An officer heard the gunshots and rushed to help. Nineteen-year-old Tyreke Desire and 20-year-old Larry Flowers taken into custody, but Johnson died at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Congregants described Johnson as a leader who was always ready to help anyone who needed it. They lamented that such an inspiring community figure would become another casualty in what many are calling a neighborhood at war. "It doesn't matter who it is, who you are, what race, what creed, he would help you out," said congregant Gerald Daniels. "My condolences go out to him, cause he was a great man."

Church member Christopher Spann recalled speaking to him on the phone the day he was shot. "I called Pastor Johnson at the house to give me a jolt to my truck because it had just wrecked out 30 minutes prior," he said. "A mechanic was fixing on the truck, and when he fixed it, the truck went crank, so we called Pastor Johnson back at the house, and he never made it. He went to the store first and got gunned down."

Daniels said he is glad the suspects were caught but indicated nothing will bring back a man who helped him turn his life around and who was needed by his family and others in the community. "They have to stop, cause if you want something you've got to work for it," he said. "You got to go out there and work for it. You know, you can't just go around taking and killing on top of that. You took somebody's father, husband. You know, you took a part of me, a part of the church, a part of the community."

Desire and Flowers face several charges, including armed robbery and first-degree murder.

Members of the church said they will march on Friday nights to show they are taking their community back from criminals.
