Guardians of the Galaxy - Dave Bautista

Posted: Updated:

What do you get when you combine a guy who's totally jacked up, a comic book and a movie? One of this summer's biggest flicks. Tonight, we go up close and personal with one of the stars of the new movie "Guardians of the Galaxy."

Comic books are tightening their grip on the movies. "Guardians of the Galaxy" is based on a Marvel comic series, and the movie version is expected to be a summer Blockbuster.

This time an unlikely group of galactic ex-cons/super heroes team up to save the day.

Dave Bautista: "The super heroes in Guardians aren't your stereotypical super heroes. They don't have these amazing superhero powers. They've also got a lot of baggage. They have interesting back stories."

One of the super heroes is Drax, played by Bautista. And he was in South Florida today telling Deco Drive about comics and careers.

Dave Bautista: "It's hard to describe Drax. I always tell people they gotta know two things about him. One, he's heartbroken and two, he takes everything literarily, so everything you say to him he's going to take literally, and he literally means everything he says."

Drax sounds like a big softy, but Bautista is anything but. The actor is a former MMA fighter and professional wrestling star.

Dave Bautista: "I fell into acting. I did a favor for a friend. I was still wresting and realized I loved it. I wanted to pursue it while I was at WWE, but I was locked down under contract."

Dave's gone from the WWE ring to the big screen.

Dave Bautista: "I actually wanted to fight, and I wanted to be an actor. I said I wanted to pursue these things, and I wanted to do it while I was WWE, and they wouldn't let me, and I said 'OK, I'm going to leave. I'm going to pursue these things.'"

Wrestling's loss is Marvel Comic's gain.

Dave Bautista: "Yeah, I think I did all right."

No one's going to argue with Bautista, especially when he is guarding our galaxy.

I'll never forget the endless summers I spent on the coast of North Carolina. My shoulders were always kissed by the sun, my hair was continually salty from the ocean and my one-piece, bright blue bathing suit was my constant companion.

I don't remember dying, but I did. Twice. It was a chilly Fall morning in October at a dentist's office in Santa Fe. My mom had escorted me to what was supposed to be a regular wisdom teeth extraction appointment.
