Fork and Balls

Posted: Updated:

A Fort Lauderdale restaurant is taking a comfort food and placing it in the center of your plate. Roll this around in your mind. It's meatballs, meatballs and meatballs at Fork and Balls. Dig in.

You get much more than one meatball at Fork and Balls. This Las Olas eatery is giving an old favorite a big-time reboot.

Chef Bill Bruening: "We play with lamb. We do some short rib stuff. We do some tweaked-out food here and there, but when it comes down to it, it's meatballs."

Four balls may be good in baseball. But in this place, three is the magic number.

Chef Bill Bruening: "Everything we serve is normally three balls unless you get a slider sliders we do one ball."

What you want and how you want it that's completely your call.

Chef Bill Bruening: "And you can choose your sauce. You can choose what kind of ball you'd like whether it be beef or a blend ball chicken ball, pork ball veggie ball. We've got all the different assortments."

In the meatball universe, the possibilities are endless.

Chef Bill Bruening: "When it comes down to it there won't be anything that I won't grind."

You can get these round mounds of delight a lot of different ways. On top of a salad or beans and veggies. Inside a toasted sub with ricotta cheese. By themselves with sauce and focaccia bread.

Chef bill bruening: "We try and please all. We don't discriminate here at Fork and Balls."

That includes traditionalists, as well.

Chef Bill Bruening: "Grandma's plate is a spaghetti and meatball with an eggplant tomato sauce a little bit of fresh mozzarella and basil."

Meatballs aren't the only specialty in this house.

Chef Bill Bruening: "We also have wines on tap. It's new to the state of Florida and it's just an excellent way to keep wine beautiful."

If you're a serious baller, this is where you want to chow down and hang out.

Chef Bill Bruening: "And it's good comfort food that people can go out and have a drink, have some comfort food and really make ... have a smile and a good time."

When I first heard that the Crop Top was back in style, I walked straight into my bedroom, stood in front of the mirror, lifted my shirt, turned to the side and stuck my gut out as far as it would go.

Mattie McDonald was one of the prettiest women I'd ever seen. She had light green eyes, dark brown hair and milky white skin. When she wafted by me, she smelled of lavender, honeysuckle and some other hypnotizing perfume I couldn't quite put my finger on. I spent a lot of my spare time daydreaming about her and not just because I wanted to know her. Ultimately, I wanted to be her.

When I walked out of the Hong Kong airport, the heat of the city slapped me so hard across the face, it was like a woman catching her cheating husband with a long-suspected mistress.

You can work up a great big hunger when you're an action hero, especially if you're playing a guy who's half man, half god. Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson gets really hungry in his latest movie, "Hercules." Our So-Flo homeboy had to stay pretty jacked for the role. That meant watching his diet, but when it was finally time to let loose, he knew just where to go.

Singing in public can sometimes be very embarrassing, which is why tequila was invented. Or you could go a bit more private. At our new favorite karaoke place, invite your friends and family, grab a few tequila shots and a mic, and suddenly become a superstar.
