Hundreds of IKEA shoppers turn out for grand opening

SWEETWATER, Fla. (WSVN) -- IKEA Miami is now open and hundreds of shoppers are taking advantage of its grand opening.

Located next to Dolphin Mall, the Swedish retailer's 39th store in the U.S. opened its doors Wednesday morning at 9.

As an incentive, a free sofa was given to the first 39 people in line, and the next 100 visitors got a free armchair. "It's a free couch, and IKEA Miami is a huge thing," said Matthew Aylward. "We've been having to travel up to Sunrise all this time, and that's just way too far, so it's about time it comes down to the 305."

The first 2,500 also received a gift card ranging between $10 and $250 or a buy-one-get-one free offer from the store's bistro. "Free hot dog, yogurt or cinnamon bun," said IKEA Miami store manager Selwyn Crittendon.

Along with all free giveaways, shoppers got to enjoy breakfast and live music as a band performed just outside the store. "The kitchen is going," said Crittendon, "so the first plate that we have here is the 99-cent breakfast that we'll offer everyday, and of course everyone loves the famous Swedish meatballs, and we have a little Lingonberry jam to compliment it today."

Miami-Dade Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz also came out to show his support and stressed the importance of how this store is impacting the city's economy. "It is vital to our economy, this store," he said. "Not only the jobs, but look at the amount of people here in line. There's still a large need for jobs in our community, and that is something that this store provides."

IKEA Miami boasts one of largest retail spaces in the region. "With 416,000 square feet and 10,000 exclusively designed products, but we have more space for you to take it home today," said Crittendon.

Diaz said, "We're very proud to have this store, especially in District 12 in Miami-Dade County."

Diaz celebrated being re-elected as commissioner in Tuesday's primary election just hours before the grand opening but said he was thrilled to be part of Wednesday's festivities. "It's an eye-opener," he said "I haven't slept in 48 hours, but we're still going. This is awesome. You can't beat this."

IKEA Miami's store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
