Accused killer of man in wheelchair faces judge

Posted: Updated:

NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A man accused of killing a man in a wheelchair and leading police on a hot pursuit facing a judge Wednesday morning.

Just 24 hours earlier, the intersection of Northwest 95th Street and Interstate 95 was an active crime scene where a man was shot dead in a wheelchair. On Wednesday, all that remains at the scene is a memorial to remember the man who was killed, 58-year-old Israel Zequra.

According to Miami-Dade Police, 27-year-old Rodney Louis of Miami came up behind Zequra and shot him multiple times at I-95 and Northwest 95th Street, Tuesday morning.

Louis then led police on a fifteen-minute car chase captured by 7-Skyforce. A crash led to his arrest.

Wednesday morning, Louis appeared in bond court. He is charged with first-degree murder, fleeing and eluding a police officer, resisting arrest without violence, and grand theft after a stolen Glock was found inside his Chevy Impala.

"Mr. Louis, you have three cases. The first case is first-degree murder," said Judge Teresa Pooler.

According to police, Louis still has not given a motive for his attack.

Regardless of what led to the shooting, people who live and work in the area are disgusted. "There's nothing really you can say," said a resident who lives in the area where the shooting occurred. "The person is a coward, no feelings whatsoever for humanity. They don't value life anymore. It's just sad."

"He [Zequra] asked for money, you know, wanted a handout every now and then," said one person who knew Zequra. "But he's pretty much a nice guy."

"He was helpless and homeless so ... that was sad," said another person.

According to police, Zequra in fact lived at Northwest 96th Street with his wife.

In the police report, Rodney Louis is listed as an independent promoter, but that job is on hold for now, as he sits in jail awaiting trial without bond. "I'm finding that there's probable cause for first-degree murder. Sir, I'm holding you on no-bond on that," said Pooler.
