WSVN — Everyone loves getting away to an amazing resort for a nice vacation, but if you don’t have time to head out of town, our makeover maestro shows us how to create a resort style area without ever leaving home.

Martin Amado: “Do you wish your home had more living space? If you don’t have any more room inside, then the best place to find it is outdoors.”

Martin Amado: “On today’s Room for Improvement, we are turning this unused grassy space behind the house into an additional room without walls perfect for the South Florida lifestyle.”

Martin Amado: “The first thing that we did was build a retaining wall to make it level with the existing patio. We back filled it with dirt, adding some leveling sand, and now it’s ready for the new pavers.”

Martin Amado: “Here are the pavers. I chose a sand color to compliment the exterior of the home and three different sizes to add more visual interest on the floor.”

Martin Amado: “All right, so Kevin is here from Premiere Pavers, who is going to show us how easy the installation is. And, Kevin, the best thing is that it doesn’t require any cement, right?”

Kevin: “Exactly. Pavers is what we consider to be an interlocking system, which means that everything sits on top of sand, and the outside is cemented down as a border.”

Martin Amado: “I love the look of the pavers. Now, to finish off the retaining wall, we’re adding what’s called an end cap, which consists of a larger paver cemented to the front and a smaller paver creating an overhang.”

Martin Amado: “The pavers are done! It looks fantastic! Now, let’s bring in the plants.”

Martin Amado: “I’m using a combination of perennials, which means they come back every year, and annuals for a pop of color. These you do have to replace every season, but it’s worth it.”

Martin Amado: “You can get the look of a professional landscaper, to vary the height of the plants and also the textures, which is what we did. Now let’s move on to furniture.”

Martin Amado: “Nothing gives an outdoor space an instant resort feel like an umbrella.”

Martin Amado: “Plants can go low and they can also go up high. Love baskets.”

Martin Amado: “Now, you know I have to try this, right? Perfect!”

Martin Amado: “Final touch, and we’re done!”

Martin Amado: “Before, the homeowner was limited to the screened-in patio. Now, by adding the pavers and creating this beautiful deck, we have more living space that’s perfect for outdoor entertaining. It was a lot of work, a lot of sweat equity, but it was well worth it. Until next time, I’m Martin Amado for 7News.”
