CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Power outages from the first major snowstorm of the season are forcing some residents of the Northeast to celebrate Thanksgiving in the dark.

The outages on Thursday are particularly bad in northern New England, where more than 200,000 customers were without power in New Hampshire and more than 100,000 were without electricity in Maine.

There’s no estimate on when electricity will be restored in either state. Customers in New Hampshire have been told it could take several days and advised to seek shelter elsewhere.

More than 51,000 utility customers greeted Thanksgiving Day without electricity in New York state. The largest number of outages was reported in Ulster and Dutchess counties along the Hudson River Valley. Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation says additional repair crews have been brought in, but outages could last into the weekend.

More than 16,000 customers are without power in New Jersey.
