WSVN — You’ve shopped until you dropped. Now, make sure you don’t drop the ball on shipping. It’s time to get those gifts to the people you love! 7’s Lynn Martinez shares the secrets to savvy shipping in tonight’s Dollars and Sense.

After last year’s major Christmas delivery blunder left thousands without something under the tree, Santa’s delivery experts are getting shipping savvy!

Rick Suarez: “This is our season. We’re prepared and we’ve been getting geared up all year long for speed and reliability and readiness.”

Santa may know if you’ve been bad or good, but Miami Postmaster Rick Suarez knows where your gifts are!

Rick Suarez: “We’re anticipating somewhere between 450 to 470 million packages this holiday season. It’s about a 12 to 14 percent increase from last year.”

Unless you plan on your gifts hitching a ride on Santa’s sleigh, waiting until the last minute will send you and your wallet straight to the naughty list.

Rick Suarez: “The price is still the same, unless you mail it right before Christmas and then obviously you’d have to mail it with our expedited services if you’d like it to be guaranteed to get there.”

Rick suggests stuffing as much as you can into flat rate boxes at the post office. The boxes are free and it doesn’t matter what the package weighs, as long as the box closes.

Rick Suarez: “That’s very important. Whether you’re mailing a small book or you’re mailing a very heavy item, the price is the same.”

Size does matter! The bigger the box, the more it costs, so consider shipping in several smaller boxes.

Monica Castagna: “[Customers say] ‘I want to put everything in this big box.’ It’s gonna cost you like $800. You can put it in a smaller box, which is a 24x16x12, and it will cost you $120 and you split it in 3 boxes.”

Employees at Miami Postal Pack and Ship are Santa’s packing pros! Broken gifts are a waste of your money and not very fun to open, so pack smart.

Monica Castagna: “If it’s not packed well, of course it’s gonna look like a truck went over the box when you receive it.”

What about insurance?

Monica Castagna: “If it is something valuable, yes, because one in a million, you gonna lose a package somewhere.”

There’s no better deal than getting something for free! If you’re shopping online, free shipping day is this week on Dec. 18, so take advantage!

When in doubt, go to the experts. They’re ready to help keep your holiday budget, merry and bright.

Rick Suarez: “Our team members are very excited and we will not let our public down.”

Today is the busiest holiday mailing day for the U.S. Postal Service, so get those gifts out now!
