WSVN — If you’ve ever had that blue screen of death on your computer, you know the damage computer repairs can do to your wallet. One South Florida company is repairing computers for free. Lynn Martinez explains how they are able to do it in tonight’s Dollars and Sense.

Do you have a bad hard drive? Maybe you sat on your laptop or have those annoying pop ups? Losing access to your computer is very stressful.

Myra Duarte: “We use it for everything. We depend on it for work, for fun, for projects for our daughter for school. It is … it is our life line.”

Getting it fixed is an even bigger headache.

Anthony: “Computer repairs can definitely be expensive.”

Larc Technical Institute says it has the solution to your computer repairs and to that nasty bill.

Alberto Ruiz: “We’re offering a free computer repair service to the public.”

Myra Duarte: “There’s nothing free. There’s no free lunch. I was very weary of free and I said there has got to be a catch.”

But Myra brought her laptop in and realized they were serious about free.

Alberto Ruiz: “We’re actually running a technical repair training company. Our service is free because we have a student base that needs to learn and we have the instructors ready to train them.”

Students work side-by-side with trained technicians on the computers clients bring in.

Alberto Ruiz: “The biggest drawback for IT students now is that they’re leaving training schools, universities without any work experience, so they’re finding it hard to get into the job market. We actually fix that through our program.”

The only thing the client would pay for would be parts, but Alberto promises you won’t get hassled by his team.

Alberto Ruiz: “We don’t require any of our clients to purchase any parts from us. In fact, we don’t sell parts normally.”

And your personal information is safe too.

Alberto Ruiz: “We take security here very, very seriously. Part of our policy is no one is allowed to bring any data recording media into the office.”

Clients are getting free, trustworthy computer repairs.

Myra Duarte: “We are extremely happy. Free makes us happy. Being able to trust them, makes us even happier.”

And students are getting work training skills.

Anthony: “They’re helping me out, I’m learning here. They’re getting a free service and it’s just a good idea all around.”

Larc does charge a small fee for Mac computers.
