NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — Police are searching for the driver responsible for fatally striking a pedestrian in North Miami Beach, then fleeing the scene.

Officials responded to the scene of the accident near Northeast 178th Street and 19th Avenue, at around 2 a.m., Sunday. According to North Miami Beach Police, the victim was crossing the street when a car driving northbound struck the victim and sped away.

Neighbors in the area said this accident did not have to end in tragedy. "He could have saved his life. Just stop and call 911," said area resident Mohamed Eshiba. "Just stop, just stop, just stop, please, ’cause it could be one of your family [members]."

"The person had no feelings," said Oscar Mejia.

Investigators still don’t have a description of the car or the driver.
