FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) — A mother and her 14-year-old son were caught in the path of danger when a driver lost control of the SUV, Monday morning.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the two victims were walking down the street in the area of Northeast 56th Street and North Dixie Highway when they were hit by the driver. That driver then crashed into a pole.
7Skyforce HD flew over the scene, at around 9:30 a.m., Monday, where rescue crews could be seen. "Cars were smoking and on fire and police were there and an ambulance. They came rather quickly," said witness Ria Gaeta.
All three people involved were injured after the collision. "The young man and the older lady were walking down the sidewalk, and this guy just comes out of nowhere and slams the vehicle," Harrington said.
Gaeta said she called police after a driver alerted her about the crash. "It was devastating. It could have been anyone. One of our co-workers came in seconds before it happened and it could be someone’s life changed drastically," she said. "I was outside on the phone and a woman in a black SUV, she said, ‘Please call 911, someone’s down, there’s a really bad accident, someone hit the pole.’ That’s all I know. So I actually called, and then I went outside and I saw someone in the street."
Harrington’s car sustained damage in the accident, but she said she’s thinking of the victims’ well-being. "I’m just praying for the two people that were involved, innocent bystanders, really," she said. "I can always get another vehicle, but you can’t replace life."
The driver and the 14-year-old were transported to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. The woman was taken to Broward Health North in Pompano Beach.
No charges have been placed on the driver as of Monday evening.
