NASSAU, Bahamas (WSVN) — A JetBlue airplane made a rough landing as it touched down in Nassau, Friday afternoon.
According to officials, JetBlue flight 29 reported a front-end landing gear malfunction before landing, at around 4:30 p.m.
Nassau-based pilot Shakeno Munnings shot cellphone video of the landing as he watched in disbelief. The footage shows the nose of the aircraft causing a spark as it comes to a stop on the runway. "Man, it was unbelievable," said Munnings.
Munnings said he was waiting at the airport when he heard about the aircraft’s troubles. "It was on the radio, listening to the planes coming in, and then they said ’emergency in progress,’" he said.
Another 7News viewer sent in a video of the plane as it touched down on the landing strip.
Large crowds gathered outside the airport to watch the aircraft touch down. Crews rushed to meet the plans as it came to a stop and sprayed the plane with foam.
"It was just vehicles coming out of nowhere — ambulances, fire engines, airport vehicles, people rushing, police cars," said Munnings.
The plane had taken off from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia.
JetBlue released a statement that read in part, "JetBlue flight no. 29 from Washington National Airport (DCA) to Nassau, Bahamas (NAS) reported a landing gear malfunction prior to arrival. The aircraft landed in Nassau utilizing the EMBRAER 190 aircraft’s rear gear, with its nose gear partially extended. Response crews met the aircraft on the runway to ensure the safety of those onboard."
According to the airline, there were 93 customers and four crew members on board. No one was injured.
"It could have been worse. I’ve seen worse, so I’m very thankful that everyone was all right," said Munnings.
Airport officials said everyone on board the plane was evaluated by emergency crews and released.
