Its Finally Friday
Posted by Phil Ferro
High pressure will dominate our weather over the next few days with partly cloudy skies and a chance for a runaway shower. The only "fly in the ointment", is a cool front by North Florida that is fizzling out. If it hangs around long enough it could bring us a slight chance for rain by Sunday, but I think it will fall apart before that. Monday, Columbus Day should a very nice day. If you are off... enjoy!
Meanwhile, have you heard about what the Weather Channel is planning on doing?
As we all know, for many decades, NOAA has been naming tropical systems. Who can forget Andrew, Katrina, or Wilma to name just a few. Well, now a national network has decided to do their own naming, not of hurricanes... but winter storms! What you say? Yes, The Weather Channel will start naming winter storms for the 2012-2013 winter season.
The say the reason for this is to raise awareness on the possible impacts of a winter system and this works better with a "named storm" since it is easier to talk about and remember.
Their procedure will be as follows:
- They will name it no more than three days before impact.
- They will include the potential for snowfall, ice, wind and temperature.
My only question is, since these names are not offered by an official government agency, no other broadcast organization will use them, so there is not one unified voice. This will defeat the purpose of having a name to simplify the watches and warnings process. While the Weather Channel my use a name, CNN won't, nor will MSN or CBS or etc...
What do you think, good or bad idea?
Here is a list of the winter storm named for 2012:
Athena
Brutus
Caesar
Draco
Euclid
Freyr
Gandolf
Helen
Iago
Jove
Khan
Luna
Magnus
Nemo
Orko
Plato
Q
Rocky
Saturn
Triton

Feeling the HEAT
Posted by Vivian Gonzalez
We are going to be feeling the Heat once again this afternoon. Summer officially begins on Friday and wouldn't you know it... it's started a few weeks early for us with temperature reading a few degrees above where we should be for this time of year. The weather so far has been great and outside of a spotty inland storm today and Thursday that is basically it. On Friday, we could see some more moisture around.

Tropical Depression #2

Tropical depression Two made landfall over Belize Monday night, with gusty winds and heavy rain. The main threat over the next day or so over Belize, Northern Honduras, Southern Yucatan and Guatemala will be rain. Flash flooding over mountainous areas will be likely as 6 inches of rain are expected in the next 48 hours.

Low rain chance for now

Dad's day weekend was nice if you had outdoor activities planned and the start of the week is just the same. A low rain chance is expected on this Monday. We have a strong area of high pressure in control and if we see any showers or storms they will form well inland due to an East-Southeast breeze. However, seasonal chances are expected from Tuesday through Thursday. Originally the thinking was that we were going to tap into some tropical moisture associated with a disturbance (tropical wave) in the Northwestern Caribbean Sea, but it seems like the majority of it will be suppressed to the South. We will be monitoring moisture levels carefully. For now, only a 30-40% chance of rain is expected through Thursday.

Sunny & Hot Father's Day Weekend

Looking like summer and feeling like summer.
Summer doesn't begin for another week or so, but it sure feels like it. We are expecting mostly sunny conditions both Saturday and Sunday with highs in the low 90's, and only a slight chance for inland rain every day. Wishing all the great Dads a very wonderful Father's Day!!!
